CHOOSING A SCHOOL

Decisions regarding post-secondary education and training are critical. Whether a student is university, community college, or vocational/technical school bound, many factors need to be considered when choosing a school. Community colleges and vocational/technical schools can serve as the primary choice or as the gateway to more education and training. Visiting with college representatives and attending regional and out-of-state college fairs can aid in this process.

Know yourself and your reasons for attending school. Consider the following:

• admission requirements/policies
• academic majors/strength of programs
• location and size
• cost/available financial aid
• housing/facilities/support services
• campus activities
• other programs (study abroad, ROTC, internships)
• employment opportunities while in school

RESEARCHING SCHOOLS

Collecting/comparing information on schools being considered is important. Students and parents should be part of this process. Possible sources include the following:

• campus visits

COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS

Before applying to schools, students should check to see if they meet the entrance requirements and if they are a good candidate for these schools. Students should request applications, observe deadline dates, and submit all requested information (transcripts, letters of recommendation, and personal statements). College admission officers suggest applying online. Schools prefer this and applications are processed faster and with more accuracy.
